Arbutus Ridge developed in two waves: the uplands of Mackenzie Heights filled with middleclass homes between 1912 and the 1930s, while the lower flats — once nicknamed 'Asthma Flats' — were filled with sand and built up in the 1940s and '50s. The Arbutus Greenway, running through the neighbourhood, follows the route of the old Vancouver-to-Steveston interurban rail line.
