A little Strathcona history
Strathcona grew from workers' cottages around the Hastings Mill during Vancouver's 1886– 1920 boom, and was long known simply as “the East End.” It holds one of the largest concentrations of 19th- and early-20th-century buildings in the city. Local landmarks tell the story: Lord Strathcona Elementary (founded 1891) is the oldest school in Vancouver, and the Vancouver Japanese Language School (1906) is the oldest of its kind in Canada.
